I think it would be simple to blame the loss of her poetry on Sappho’s sexuality, but Hare goes on to suggest that it was burned for Sappho’s reputation of promiscuity. However, it seems necessary to acknowledge her potential bisexuality in order to fully understand what little poetry remains. Throughout history, her bisexuality has been erased and her writings about women have given her the reputation of a lesbian. To me, one of the most important things that Hare brought up was Sappho’s sexuality. While much has been reconstructed from her poetry, it is a shame that such an important literary contribution was partially lost at the hands of the church. Hare’s writing on Sappho was just how much of her life is unknown. Paler than summer grass am I, and likewise fallen Lightning races under my skin, a delicate fire. This book goes a long way in explaining her own journey and how she became so attuned to other people and their feelings.Plot:Shannon is a young girl struggling to find her place in the world. She really understands young people and has a depth of understanding about their emotions and motivations. This is a very personal book and is based on the author's own memories. I requested this graphic novel based solely on her name but was a little scared that it was a "comic book" and wouldn't have the same depth as her other novels. Hale is an amazing author and I really love all her books.
